Judith Hill is an emerging artist, based in the New South Wales Hunter region. Her practice reveals the limitless possibilities of artistic interpretation, with keen interests in landscape, portraiture and still life developed across mixed media and experimental applications.
Judith has forged a diverse yet distinctive body of work through the exploration of materials and subjects, and a deep fondness for en plein air painting stemming from self-directed artist trips in locations like Fowlers Gap Broken Hill, Lake Eraring, Mudgee and Gloucester. The vast and changing landscapes, gradually shifting colour and the survival of vegetation through harsh drought and arid terrain has held a pervading influence on her works.
Judith draws inspiration from the natural world, the nuances of everyday objects, and the challenge of visualising personal, fleeting impressions through form, colour and movement. The emotion and tension created in her observations encourages the viewer to look more closely at their own experience in order to make sense of the image before them. Judith is captivated by visualising this experience, and very much enjoys exploring and experimenting with creative processes in her Bolwarra Heights studio and painting on location.
Through self-education and interactions with peers and mentors, Judith has found a deep sense of community and support for her practice within the Hunter area. She exhibits annually as part of The Circle at Art Systems Wickham and has been invited to show with Painters Ink at Back To Back Gallery Cooks Hill.
Despite having a relatively new practice, most recently in 2022 Judith Hill was selected in the Lake Art Prize for an emotionally charged charcoal drawing of her brother. who had died earlier in the same year. In August 2021 she was selected for The Gosford Art Prize and in 2020, Judith was successfully selected in The Newcastle Art Space Mentorship Program, working one on one over the course of the year with Danielle Nelson. She received Best Emerging Artist and Best Abstract Painting in Show at the Hunter Valley showing and was further a Selected Finalist in the Hawkesbury Art Prize 2019 at Purple Noon Gallery, Freeman’s Reach.
